On Sunday, the global version of MIUI 14 will be launched alongside the Xiaomi 13 series. Although there is not much official information yet - I've only been around the Chinese version - Xiaomi is still leaking us bits and pieces. Here are some of the highlights of MIUI 14.

The MIUI team posted on Twitter a short video asking: Which upcoming feature are you most looking forward to? It then lists 4 new features that are new to MIUI 14. Now I wanted to respond to that and explain what they mean.

  1. New design
Well, the design is exactly what hasn't evolved that much. The basic theme is the same as MIUI 13, icons, layout, maybe a new wallpaper. But there is a noticeable difference! There are new Widget icons that resemble a capsule and take up 2 spaces. Also, folders have a new view that highlights the first three app icons and can be launched directly from there. Of course, the control center has also changed to the new layout. And that's it, but if there's anything else, we'll find out at the presentation.
  2. System optimisation
So that's where the real power of MIUI 14 will lie. Although I'm not sure what's left of the Chinese MIUI in the global version, but hopefully the basic new features. These would include a smaller system size, less space occupancy, photon engine, removable MIUI apps, lower power requirements, etc.
  3. Increased privacy
Protecting our data is getting more and more attention at Xiaomi, which, as a Chinese company, can be quite funny. But this isn't China, it's Europe, and more attention needs to be paid to data protection here. These include sharing our location by occasion, data stored only on European servers, biometrics stored only locally, malicious code scanning on every app installation, permission management, digital wellbeing, etc.
  4. Connectivity
MIUI 14 makes it faster and easier to connect to your devices, whether they're Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. So it will communicate faster with your smart home devices, headphones will be more widely usable, and data transfer between devices will be easier.

I hope there will be more new features in MIUI 14 at the launch on Sunday and that I will indeed do a separate test and demo of MIUI 14. Don't miss out, we'll see you on Sunday on our YouTube channel for the live stream!
