While end-to-end encryption was already available for text messages in Facebook Messenger, the useful feature has now been extended to voice and video calls.

The Facebook announced in a blog post back in August that the change would be introduced, but it was not known exactly when, and there were even rumours that it would not be coming soon. It seems that the time has now come and the company has finally brought the much anticipated feature to Messenger.

Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook on Monday (where else) announcedto make end-to-end encryption available in Messenger. "We've introduced end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls in Messenger, and optional encryption for group audio and video calls. I am proud that we are extending encryption to more and more services." - wrote the Facebook boss. Encryption of text messages has been present in chat since 2016, when the secret chat option was introduced in the app. Although Zuckerberg did not say specifically, it is likely that end-to-end encryption will be available for both iPhone and Android devices in Messenger.

The essence of end-to-end encryption is that only the sender and the recipient can see and hear the messages. With data security being one of the most pressing issues today, it goes without saying how important and useful this security feature is.
