Part of an internal study by Facebook into the impact of Instagram on teenagers' mental health has been made public.

In mid-September the The Wall Street Journal leaked by The research, conducted by parent company Facebook to assess the impact of Instagram on teenagers' self-image and mental health, came to a devastating conclusion, revealing that even Facebook's own survey found that Instagram can lead to mental health problems.

One in three girls with body image disorder use Instagram to further damage their self-image, and it is a major contributor to anxiety and depression, according to the magazine. Perhaps even more serious is the fact that six per cent of US teens and 13 per cent of UK teens said that Instagram had something to do with their suicidal thoughts.

Facebook responded two weeks after the leak, saying that the material published in the newspaper contained out-of-context elements and ignored things that were positive about the platform's impact.

The company released the results of the survey publicly late Wednesday evening, US time, in two parts, which here and here are available. A The Wall Steet Journal did not let the matter rest, responding with four more internal with document which were not published by Facebook. What is even more interesting is that Jeff Horwitz, a journalist for the newspaper according to Facebook published the documents only after the newspaper informed them that a new series of articles about them would be posted on the site within the hour.
