The evolution of the phone industry is not just about hardware, but also about related services. So it's not just about making devices faster and more powerful, but also about adding new features never seen before.

One example is the Portrait mode, which gives you more versatility in your imaging. This option has been available in many Xiaomi models for quite some time, and has also become available on cheaper devices. However, in our experience, many people don't even know what it is and why it can be useful.

Portrait mode?

The point of portrait mode is that not all details in the image are equally sharp. Specifically, the main subject is sharp and the background is blurred. This gives the effect of having been shot with a DSLR camera, creating the illusion of depth of field, which emphasises the space.

Effects

On quite a few phones, you have the option to add various effects to Portrait mode, the so-called bokeh effect.

It makes sense not only for portrait photos.

For many models, it is possible to edit the Portrait mode, i.e. to change the amount of blurring, thanks to the fact that the necessary image information is stored in the file as metadata.

Does it make sense?

However, you should be aware that there may be problems with Portrait mode. In such cases, the software simply washes out or crops the wrong parts of the image, so the end result is not convincing or spectacular, but a bit ridiculous.

There are many reasons for this, but the most common is inadequate lighting conditions, which can interfere with the electronics and sensors in your mobile phone. We recommend everyone to experiment and try it, you will soon get a taste for Portrait mode.
