After the unprecedented Mi 10 Ultra and the Redmi K30 Ultra, the third big launch for the manufacturer was a transparent TV. Xiaomi's timing couldn't have been better, as we got to see some real innovation at the 11 August 2020 event held to celebrate Xiaomi's 10th anniversary. The Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition not only uses a ground-breaking transparent solution, but is the first transparent TV in the world to be produced in such a series. Sure enough, it's not just some tech-demo gadget, but a market-ready industrial masterpiece as well.

The Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition features a standalone luminous display that is transparent at the edges, giving the images displayed the effect of floating in mid-air. This TV presents visual content in a new way - a new light...haha - that was previously only seen in sci-fi movies.

The world's first mass-produced transparent TV

The Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition offers the perfect combination of cutting-edge display technology and subtle industrial design. For Xiaomi, it foreshadows the future of TV design. When turned off, the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition looks like a simple glass panel. The images displayed appear to float in the air, combining virtuality with reality to create an unprecedented, realistic experience.

Unlike traditional TVs with a rear panel, the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition creatively integrates all the processing units into the stand, while maintaining the compact screen form factor, which presented the manufacturer with a number of technical challenges.

After overcoming these difficulties, Xiaomi became the world's first transparent OLED TV manufacturer and China's number one manufacturer of OLED base modules (OBMs). This means that Xiaomi is now the only TV brand in China that is uniquely capable of mass-producing a complex product like the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition.

Images float in the air on the stunning display

In addition to its futuristic design, the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition also features flagship-level hardware that achieves groundbreaking upgrades in both sound and picture quality.

Its 55″ transparent OLED panel has a static contrast ratio of 150,000:1 and an infinite dynamic contrast ratio, with extra rich blacks and unrivalled brightness. Utilising the DCI-P3 93% colour spectrum, the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition is able to reproduce the true colours that bring images to life. The 10-bit panel is capable of 1.07 billion colour combinations, an extra wide colour gamut that far exceeds what the human eye can perceive.

In addition, the TV comes with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 120 Hz MEMC technology, which gives the user a smoother and clearer motion representation.
According to 1 ms fast response rate makes the game really lifelike, with smooth controls and low latency.

Like its predecessor, the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition is equipped with an AI Master Smart engine and a MediaTek 9650 custom-built TV chip with more than 20 optimization algorithms and dedicated optimization. For the 5 main usage environments, the device intelligently refines graphics and resolution, resulting in vibrant colour images.

Display properties

The 55" screen resolution is a mere FHD 1920 x 1080, which is not comparable to traditional 4K panels (not in a negative sense) due to the display technology. There is no backlighting, the pixels light up on their own. The viewing angle is 178°, with a chromatic angle of 120°

Hardware

Cortex A73 quad-core MediaTek processor, Mali-G52 MC1 GPU, 3GB RAM, and 32 GB of storage.

Wireless connectivity: 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and infa

The Tv weighs nearly 25kg and consumes 190W.

Audio capabilities

The TV also supports AI Master for Audio, which allows the device to intelligently detect the type of content being played and select the right audio mode from a list of movies, music, news, sports and more. The device further enhances audio performance with support for Dolby Atmos®️, 2x 8W speakers.

Design

"It's not a TV, it's a work of art." The Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition's aesthetic design gives it a unique look even when switched off. The display is only 5.7 mm thick and the round base has a special coating. The millimetre-thick surface is slightly reflective, similar to a CD disc, so there is no "definite bottom" to the content displayed.

The TV is perfect not only for homes, but also for galleries, museums, shopping centres and theatres.

UI

The Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition has a custom-built MIUI for TV. The user interface - including Home, Settings, My App - has been specifically designed to better showcase the visual qualities and strength of the transparent screen, creating a unique user experience. The system supports Always On Display (AOD) and allows users to customise the images and text displayed.

Mi TV sales have led the way for six consecutive quarters (Q1 2019 to Q2 2020). Over the past seven years, Mi TV business has grown from an industry newcomer to the number one TV brand in China, with annual shipments exceeding 10 million units.

With its minimalist design and flagship configurations, the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition is a work of art that exemplifies Xiaomi's unbroken commitment to technological excellence.

Price

The price of the Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition is 49.999 RMB (Chinese yuan), that is $7200. If we want to put it in HUF, we should not calculate the net price of 2.1 million HUF, because if someone would dare to order one, he will have to pay customs duty and local VAT in addition to the shipping cost. The latter is half a million forints in Hungary, so the purchase price of 2.9 to 3 million forints is quickly added up.

Official sales in China start at 10am on 16 August.
