Resolution? Input lag? Viewing angle? Contrast? Smart TV? Some of the concepts that may come up when buying a TV. Let's look at what these terms mean and which is important when considering a set.

The huge range of television products on offer presents a huge challenge for consumers, who face a difficult decision when it comes to making a purchase. Apart from design and price, there are countless other factors that can influence this process. To help you make the right choice, you can consult the various technical specifications, which usually include various parameters and concepts. In this article, we'll take a look at what they mean and why they might be important, using some of Xiaomi's televisions.

Resolution

This metric provides information about how many pixels make up the image. A full HD display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 4K model like the Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S and 3840 x 2160 pixels.

So that means four times more pixels in the image, four times more detail.

A felbontás hatással van arra, hogy mennyire érezzük “élesnek” a képi világot, és hogy a finomabb átmenetek visszaadása mennyire pontos.

Scaling

Some televisions, such as higher-end Xiaomi devices already have an image processing chip that can enhance lower detail material. So even if the resolution of the source material is lower, the software can still generate a 4K effect from it, allowing you to exploit the potential of the panel.

Contrast

It shows the difference in brightness between the brightest and darkest points under the same background light.A contrast ratio of 5-600:1 is considered bad, 1000:1 is the average for IPS LED LCD panels, and better VA LED LCD panels can produce contrast ratios of up to 5000:1, including the Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S.

Viewing angle

This value tells you at what angle, when viewing the screen from the side (horizontal) or vertically from the top (vertical), the colours start to become distorted and you may experience a loss of contrast. It is given in degrees, and the higher the value, the better. Xiaomi TVs traditionally have a very good viewing angle. In the case of the Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S, it is roughly 165 degrees.

Input lag

Also known as input delay. It is important for gamers because it shows how quickly the screen responds to a connected control peripheral, such as a controller or mouse. It is given in milliseconds, and the lower the value, the better the TV. Currently, 10 ms is the peak for televisions, but up to 20-25 ms a set is still happily suitable for gaming. Xiaomi models typically perform very well in this area, with values between 11 and 12 ms measured.

Image refresh rate

The value in Hertz (Hz) provides information about how many frames per second a device is guaranteed to display.

Smart TV

The presence of a smart TV system indicates that the device allows direct access to various internet content, such as Netflix or YouTube. Xiaomi TVs are based on the Android TV smart platform developed by Google, which has the largest range of apps in the world.
