Huawei and Xiaomi today announced a global patent cross-licensing agreement covering communications technologies, including 5G.

A Huawei és a Xiaomi végre megállapodott egymással

Fan Zhiyong, Director of Huawei's Intellectual Property Department, said, "Huawei is very pleased to have signed the licence with Xiaomi. This license agreement again reflects the industry's recognition of Huawei's contribution to communications standards and allows us to strengthen our research investment in the mobile communications technology of the future.

Xu Ran, General Manager of Xiaomi Group Strategic Cooperation Department, said, "We are very pleased to have entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei, which fully reflects our recognition and respect for each other's intellectual property rights. Xiaomi will continue to uphold Xiaomi's intellectual property values and respect Xiaomi's intellectual property rights. We will strive for mutually beneficial, long-term and sustainable intellectual property partnerships, using intellectual property to promote inclusive technology and enable technology to benefit a wider range of people."

The recently a notice entitled "Notice of Acceptance of Administrative Rulings on Major Patent Infringement Disputes" published by China Intellectual Property News, revealed that Huawei has formally submitted an administrative ruling in the patent infringement dispute against Xiaomi.

The disputed methods are "Method for feedback of ACK/NACK information during carrier aggregation, base stations and user devices" and "Method and terminal for extracting panoramic images" and "Method and mobile terminal for screen locking".

The first two of these are disputes arising from essential patents and the latter two are disputes arising from non-essential patents. This case is an example of patent promotion for both foreign firms and growing domestic firms.

Last year at the opening of the 2022 World Design Capital conference, Huawei's CEO and Terminal BG CEO Yu Chengdong clashed over patent infringement. He said, "In many industries, especially some Chinese companies are copying our designs. Including some of our patents, people use them and don't pay us royalties, but use them directly and then talk about them as their own patents, and even copy some things directly."
