This morning, at 8:00am Hungarian time, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 was unveiled at a very special location in Beijing's Forbidden City. The venue is very unusual, it's never been done before, and Xiaomi is the first in China to do so! Below and much more...

The whole presentation took just over 1 hour and included 2 products. No, it was not the Mi Note 4! Xiaomi CEO CEO and founder of Xiaomi, hosted the show with very few participants, almost only staff, family and press.

But I guess not many of you are curious about that, so here are the dry facts and information about the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3!

Everyone was most interested in how they solved the sliding back (or screen, depending on your point of view). Well, simply with magnets. Specifically, the movement between the end points is prevented by magnets, so it's not mechanics that make it difficult to slide apart and together.

Four neodymium magnets are positioned opposite each other, with opposite poles, to provide the correct hold when opening and closing. It was simply a matter of designing the rail to be durable, at most occasionally carrying the service for fat :-D

By sliding your phone apart, you can not only turn on the screen, but also assign important and specific events and functions to it.

But Xiaomi doesn't limit this feature, you can set almost anything you want to happen when you open your phone!

It's not over yet! Not only can you customize what it does when you open it, you can also customize the sound it makes when you open it! By default, you can choose from 5 sound effects and even customize it, you can add any sound, music, effect you want. The lightsaber effect is a definite winner!

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is the most outstanding of the Xiaomi phones at the moment. Its full screen and 4 camera modules make it even more special than its predecessors.

A big step up from the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, with a 4.46mm thinner bottom bezel and a 3.82% larger screen.

So it fits a 6.39″ FHD+ AMOLED screen in the same size, with a unique aspect ratio of exactly 19.5:9.Thanks to AMOLED, it's Always-On, so you can always see the clock when the screen is off, just like the Mi 8 series (AMOLED).It has a huge 60,000:1 contrast ratio, is very bright, with 600nit brightness, and includes a sunlight function and a reading mode.

In summary, Mi Mix 3's innovations include a sliding screen that can withstand up to 300,000 unlocks (50 unlocks a day = 16.5 years of life), a huge screen that hides the front sensors and cameras, and a host of related features.

Let's jump on to the cameras, because this one has some surprises in store for us. As I wrote above, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has 4 camera modules, two in the front and two in the back.

The rear camera pair isn't the usual big/small, but both are exactly 12MP. Just that, the top Sony IMX363 is responsible for taking photos in darker and night conditions, while the bottom Samsung S5K3M3+ is for normal lighting conditions. It features optical zoom, 4-axis physical image stabilisation, the usual portrait mode and AI scene detection. We've already seen the front-facing cameras on the Redmi Note 6 Pro, where one module (Sony IMX576) has 24MP, 1.8µm super pixels for taking excellent selfies in the harshest conditions, and a 2MP module for depth of field (Bokeh effect). But that's not all! The combined performance of all of this has achieved something amazing!

It has the best camera in the world among Xiaomi phones! What's more!

Overall, it's better than the iPhone X, one point ahead of the Huawei P20, but not enough to move it up to third place, where it shares a tie with the Samsung Note 9 and HTC U12+. Of course, it doesn't even come close to the performance of the Huawei P20 Pro, which still leads the DXOMARK rankings with 109 points.

The Mix 3 has made a big splash in the photo department. You can't win a race like this with daytime pictures, most mid-range and high-end phones now take beautiful pictures, but night-time lighting is still the most sensitive point for phones. But not all of them, the top end is up there with almost all brands and overall the quality is acceptable. Until you compare.

Sorban Mix 3 | P20 Pro | iPhone X

Here, of course, it comes in second place, with the quality of the P20 Pro, but an iPhone X is a disaster in comparison.

It would be suicidal to judge these promotional photos with a professional eye, especially to put a much nicer picture next to the world's first P20 Pro. :) In such cases, only the person who took the picture personally could decide which is the more realistic. The one on the left is faded and colourless, the one on the right is over-coloured. We'll see it in real life when it arrives!

One of the controversial presentations of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, the 960 FPS slow-motion was recently released. Yes, it can indeed shoot 960 frames per second at 1080p resolution!!! No news yet on whether you can set the start and end of the slow motion recording in the video editor or already in the camera app, like on competing phones. In time, this will become clear.

So the rear camera is packed with all the good stuff. It has artificial intelligence to detect 12 situations, 7 different lighting effects, adjustable background blur and lighting, beautification, face detection and beautification during video, eye-glare reduction or eye-glare enhancement.

In summary, the rear cameras are very promising, with outstanding capabilities. But let's see what we get up front?

As I wrote above, there are dual camera modules at the front, one with a super-pixel 24MP resolution and one with 2MP, which is only needed for depth sensing. It also has a selfie LED light source for taking high-quality photos or video chatting in the dark. The two cameras can also be used to achieve a continuous bokeh effect during video.

Of course, it's powered by the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor currently available, instead of the rumoured 855. Then maybe the Mi 9 or Mix 3s could get it.

The world's first phone with 10GB of ram, but only in the special Forbidden City version, which I'll describe below. The regular Mix 3 will be available with 6GB and 8GB of ram soon, and will be paired with 128GB and 256GB of storage, which should be enough space for the massive photos and videos we'll be taking with it.

Wireless charging is nothing new, and anyone who has been following the news will already know that it will be included.

The Mix 3 also comes with a wireless charger, which charges faster than the 30%. The phone supports 10W and 18W QC3.0 charging, making it compatible not only with its own charger, but also with more powerful chargers.

The full contents of the package include, of course, in addition to the wireless charger as usual, a power quick charger, USB-C charging cable, phone case and some instructions.

Xiaom Mi Mix 3 Forbidden City Edition

As the event was also held at a special location, a special version of Mix 3 was also produced. This is the Forbidden City version, which bears its symbols and has a special interior.

It's not just the outside that makes this phone special, but the inside too. Because this is the only special version to get the promised 10GB of memory!
