Xiaomi Mi Box VS Xiaomi Mi Box S (Gearvita)

First, let's be clear about which is which. Mi Box International, as it is called abroad, is the international version of Mi Box 3. Mi Box S is the international version of Mi Box 4.

The biggest difference between the two Boxes is in appearance. Compared to the Mi Box's rounded edges and flat, pebble-like appearance, the Mi Box S's thicker and sharper edges don't look any more imposing, in fact they're more casual.

The difference in size is negligible, with the Mi Box S having a slightly more matte finish, so it reflects less of the TV's light when placed in front of it.

At the bottom, however, I feel a bit of a setback, while the Mi Box's circular rubberised sole is non-slip, the Mi Box S's plastic feet are not at all.

The connectors are the same in both, just in reverse order. The panel has not been reversed, but the whole thing has been redesigned. The Mi Box's connectors extend almost all the way to the wall of the case, while the Mi Box S's connectors are slightly deeper, so there's no gap between the cable and the case.

The other big hardware difference is the two remote controls. The Mi Box S has three new buttons, Netflix, Apps menu and Live TV (Live TV is not available in our region). The Google voice control button has been moved to the centre and given Google-style colours. The four-way control knob has been flattened in the middle, but still with a noticeable border so you can operate it in the dark. It's still made of hard plastic, so it's easy to slide your finger over it, unlike the cheaper Mi Box 4c.

And then the software comparison, as the only difference between the two is the Bluetooth chip inside the case. The Mi Box is BT4.0, while the Mi Box S is BT4.2 and that's it. The Mi Box is Android 8.0.0, while the Mi Box S is Android 8.1.0.
