I'm sure there are some of you who just looked with interest at the title: what the hell is a kernel... rightly so. Since Android is also Unix/Linux based, it contains the kernel, the core of the system. You can read more about the kernel at On Wikipedia.

The MIUI partial source code can be found on Github, but it is mostly old or only details have been provided, which is legally required, since MIUI is Android based and open source license is not inherited in China... it is a difficult legal issue. But each phone has its own kernel, or kernel on which the other software layers are built. This is how the software and hardware can be connected, so until this is made public, only Xiaomi can write an operating system for the phone that has all the features. Until then, they can only do interface rewrites and other changes, like MIUIHU or xiaomi.eu.

With the public kernel, clever programmers can start writing alternative Android systems, such as AOSP, or any other distribution based on the base android system. Why is this good for you? Well, if you're a MIUI fan you won't bother, but if you prefer the bare droid you can try it out.

If you're interested or curious about the source of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite kernel, you can find it at Githubon. Once development starts, you will find alternative operating systems on the XDA forum.
