Facebook is getting a hard slap in the face again as Senator Richard Blumenthal has called on Mark Zuckerberg to testify about the harmful effects of Instagram on children.

It's not easy to keep up with what's been happening on Facebook in recent weeks and months, as the swamp that the social giant has stepped into is getting thicker and deeper. The story began in mid-September, when the The Wall Street Journal has obtained a very interesting study in which the parent company Facebook itself came to the conclusion that the Instagram have a detrimental effect on young people's mental health. As it turned out, the internal information was leaked by the company's former product manager and data engineer Frances Haugen, who later criticised the company in a Senate hearing, including saying that Facebook chooses money over user safety.

The icing on the cake is that a few weeks ago, Facebook and the platforms under its umbrella were shut down for nearly half a day, and the US Department of Justice also fined a hefty amount of money imposed after it found that the company had discriminated in its recruitment practices between January 2018 and September 2019.

Now, the Senator who heads the Commerce Committee, Richard Blumenthal, has gone to the company and in a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, he has called for a confession from Facebook CEO or Instagram head Adam Mosseri - reported a CNN. Blumenthal also pointed out in his letter that Facebook's global head of security, Antigone Davis, had already appeared before the Commerce Committee, but said that she was not aware of any documents being withheld from the company.

Blumenthal previously linked to the tobacco industry compared by social media, and said that countless children suffer from the negative effects of social platforms or even commit suicide to escape bullying in the online space.
