The POCO F1's camera is nothing new, we've already seen it in the Redmi Note 5, more specifically in the version where it had full AI support (Chinese version). The POCO F1 also has this camera module and software support. We've already analysed the Redmi Note 5's camera in detail, you can read all about it there, with many test pictures...

Rear main camera pair

  • Primary sensor: 12MP resolution, 1.4μm large pixel, f/1.9 aperture, dual pixel autofocus
  • Secondary sensor: 5MP resolution, 1.12μm pixel size, f/2.0 aperture

Features:

  • Portrait mode with background blur
  • Dual-pixel autofocus
  • Single colour flash
  • Low light improvement
  • HDR imaging
  • Panorama mode
  • Continuous mode
  • Face recognition
  • AI beautification
  • EIS for video recording
  • AI contamination detection
  • AI scene recognition:
detects 25 object categories and 206 different scenes
  • India specific scenes AI optimizations

The higher resolution sensor is responsible for better image quality in low light conditions, with larger pixels that can collect more light and therefore less noise. For everything else, there's the Mast... I mean the other sensor. In natural light, it's almost standard to get great shots, almost every time.

The camera app has a very wide range of features, although it won't come as a big surprise to many, as it's the same software found in most AI camera devices. The AI can only be called upon in two modes, Photo and Square. In the others, the quality of the photo depends on your own skill. Experienced mobile cameramen have no problem taking a well-set and high-quality picture, but the majority don't master the tricks, so they're left with the software crutch.

Main features:

  • Short video: 10mp video recording
  • Video: space limits the length of the recording
  • Photo: take a photo with or without AI, Flash on/off/auto/lamp modes, HDR on/off/auto/on modes, effects, timer, mockup effect, water leveling, group selfies and auto beautification
  • Portrait: blur background behind subject, bokeh effect
  • Square: create an exact square image
  • Panorama: take a 180-degree panoramic picture, only in still mode
  • Manual: you can adjust: white balance, focus, shutter speed, ISO value

Selfie camera

  • 20 MP resolution, f/2.0 aperture, 0.9µm pixel size

Features:

  • AI portrait mode
  • AI recognition of 10 different scenes
  • Selfie timer
  • Face recognition

The selfie camera is not always available, only in Photo and Square mode.

Unfortunately, the system didn't allow 20mp uploads, so they're a bit dumbed down to 12mp, but still produce spectacularly good quality not only in natural light, but also in darkness. First picture taken in natural light, then in the dark with the display light on. Third at auto brightness, then the last with "flash". As the Poco F1 has no flash on the front panel, it evokes the effect of a white flash on the screen.

A little digital zoom fun. Taking advantage of the huge pixels of the 12MP sensor with 8x digital zoom, I was pleasantly surprised in the dark, I couldn't even see anyone sitting there with the naked eye. :)

There is no problem with twilight and night photography in a world of sky. If there is enough light, of course. In photos where the subject is not exposed to direct light, even AI can't improve it enough to get it right, see close up flower photos. What is illuminated, on the other hand, is spotless (if the optics are clean).

But in very low light, without flash, it doesn't take a better picture than any of the Mi series in retrospect...

On the other hand, we can't complain about the video recording at night, I mean the picture quality, but the processing is poor in some places. Especially in the last one, where the phone jams when hand-held...

But fortunately these problems are not hardware problems, but software problems and will be fixed in the future (e.g. MIUI10). So not only will the Poco F1 be lightning fast, it will be a real value for money champion, not to mention battery life (2 days, 7 hours SOT).

If you are interested in the phone and still have doubts about it, go to Lurdy and pick it up in the Hungarian Mi Store, don't just listen to the negative reviews circulating on the internet. Get your own experience, form your own opinion!
