The account @metaverse was mistakenly blocked by Instagram for a month. The company has since apologised for the mistake.

On 2 November, the photo-sharing site blocked Thea-Mai Baumann's account, accusing the artist of using someone else's profile - reported a The New York Times. According to the paper, Ms Baumann launched her own site in 2012, promoting augmented reality products.

A month after the inquiry, Instagram acknowledged the mistake. "We regret that such a mistake could have happened" - they wrote, and then restored the artist's account.

The company announced on 28 October, five days before the artist's account was blocked, that the company's name would be changed from Facebook to Meta, to give the new name more focus to the grandiose new project known as MetaVerse. A metaverzum is a future virtual reality where users can enter from home using VR devices.

Zuckerberg's vision is for virtual reality to cover almost all aspects of life, providing a home for outdoor activities and socialising, as well as a "natural" place to work.

There are many critics of the idea, with one of the social networking site's earliest investors, Roger McNamee, calling Facebook's plans for a metaverse downright dystopian. "It's a bad idea, and the fact that we all sit and pretend it's normal is particularly alarming" - said McNamee a BBC-adding that Facebook should not be allowed to create the metaverse.
