This morning, the Redmi A3 was officially launched in India, without any prior announcement. The design is a bit interesting, and the specs haven't changed much from the previous one.

Like a "tiny piece of junk" Ultra isn't it? Well, if you're up from your wallowing laughter, let's move on. The design of the Redmi A3 is probably not for us, but for those who care about appearances. The hardware is nothing to write home about either, it's probably as weak as a phone can get, but at least the price is right on the money.

Premium Halo Design, says the manufacturer, which means whatever, but they probably meant the huge round camera island. The body of the phone is okay, with the edges, flat front and back. Now, let's see the hardware, which will make you smile a little when you hear (read?) it so 2024.

Screen

The screen of the Redmi A3 has a 6.7″ diagonal, LCD technology. Its resolution is only HD+, at 1650 x 720 pixels, which is brutally low for a screen of this size. Although its refresh rate is 90 Hz, which is pretty good and at least Gorilla Glass 3 protects it from scratches.

Processor + memory

And what the phone's official presentation page doesn't say anything about is the processor. The Redmi A3 received the same process as last year's Redmi A2 , MediaTek Helio G36. It's good for everything, but not much. Certainly not for gaming, unless it's solitaire. Its AnTuTu score is around 155,000, which is slightly more than the Redmi A2, because the surrounding hardware is newer, such as 3 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage. In terms of memory, that's not all it got, you can choose from 3/4/6 GB, which of course can be expanded by + 6 GB via software. There is also a choice of storage, but you can only choose between 64 and 128 GB, but if that is not enough, you can put a microSD card of up to 1 TB in the dedicated card slot.

Camera

It doesn't have an abundance of cameras, it's a have and have-not. The rear cameras are 8 MP for the main camera and a 0.8 MP depth sensor for the second. With the size of the optics, it can probably only produce a meaningful image in bright sunlight. The front panel isn't overloaded with resolution either, but 5 MP should be enough for selfies, video chatting, meeting, etc.

Battery

But at least we have enough power, even though the 5,000 mAh battery can only charge at 10 W. So for 2-3 days of use, you need a whole night to charge it.

Although it has some laughable hardware, for the most part it's quite acceptable if you know what it's for. One other thing I missed, which doesn't usually fit in this price segment, is the side fingerprint reader. It's great that it's now standard.

Redmi A3 price

The Redmi A3 has been cleverly priced to match its specs, although it's only available in India and the pricing there is a bit better than here. The phone is 100% made in India and will only be available outside from 23 February at the prices below:

  • 3/64 GB – 7.299 INR ~ 82 EUR
  • 4/128 GB – 8.299 INR ~ 93.5 EUR
  • 6/128 GB – 9.299 INR ~ 104.5 EUR

For this iron, these prices are very reasonable, and I hope that when it gets to Europe, it won't cost much more. But I can already see all the malcontents buying it and complaining about how useless Xiaomi is. Because he wanted to Genshine on a 40 grand phone...
