According to Jim Green, recently retired NASA chief scientist, it is possible to terraform Mars and even Venus with certain tools.

Making Mars a habitable place has been a long-standing concern for researchers, and more and more people believe that we should eventually settle on Mars. Elon Musk the world's richest man, for example, would send 1 million people to colonise his planet, to be transported to the neighbouring planet in the SpaceX Starship spacecraft currently under development.

Jim Green outgoing scientist at the The New York Times-in an interview with spoke aboutthat it is indeed possible to make Mars, and even Venus, habitable in time. Green envisages the ambitious plan being realised with the help of a giant magnetic shield, the building of a magnetic field being a prerequisite for making the red planet habitable. The shield would protect against dangerous charged particles from space, shield the atmosphere from solar wind and essentially normalise temperature and pressure. This would make the atmosphere habitable and allow water, also essential for life, to come to the surface.

The scientist explained that a similar temperature control principle could make not only Mars but also Venus, known as the Evening Star, habitable. This would be necessary, as measurements show that the surface temperature of the planet can reach 500°C.
