Sleep monitoring is nothing new, smartwatches are, bracelets are now able to monitor their cycle, sleep quality, etc. But breathing problems during sleep, coughs and snoring are no longer. But there are devices that can do this, but not phones. Not for long.

The second generation of Google Nest Hubja already has the sleep monitoring function. Which monitors breathing and detects if something is disturbing the user at night, such as coughing or snoring.

According to reports, the strings in the latest update of the app refer to a "dormant sound collection" study. For now, it is only available to Google employees and participating employees must be of legal age and not working for a competing company.

In explaining the study, Google says that "our Health Sensing team is actively working to bring advanced sensing capabilities and algorithms to Android devices." This is with the aim of providing insights into users' sleep. This audio collection "supports this mission by providing data to validate, tune and improve such algorithms".

It is not yet clear if the snoring and coughing monitoring feature will be available on all Android devices, including phones and tablets, or if it will be a Pixel exclusive. We also don't know which app it would be in, although the Google Fitness and Google Clock hub Bedtime mode is a great contender.
