Touch screen issues have been reported on several Xiaomi and Redmi phones after they updated to MIUI 12.5. One XDA-Developers user, personally involved, has posted a video of his Mi 11 Ultra after updating to MIUI 12.5.

In the video you can see that the phone reacts strangely to touch, you can't scroll normally, but this only happens in certain applications. While you can scroll freely between apps, you can't on Reddit. This makes it clear that the problem is a software bug, because if it were hardware, it wouldn't work properly anywhere.

On this topic there is a Reddit page, where it turns out that not only the Mi 11 Ultra is meant. Users have also experienced the phenomenon on the following devices:

  • Xiaomi Mi 11
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra
  • Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite
  • Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro
  • Redmi Note 10 Pro
  • Redmi Note 9S

XDA-Developers contacted Xiaomi about the case and they responded. A Xiaomi spokesperson said that they are aware of the issue, they have started to release an update that fixes the bug.

Here it's worth pausing for a word and going back a scant month to when the MIUI Spanish team wrote a letter to Xiaomi about the ROM issues. One of the points was this: there are 4-6 different devices in a series, so you can understand why software support is being released much earlier. The number of devices is increasing, but, if there are no more developers, you have to compensate somehow. For this Xiaomi respondedthat they will not change the number of devices, the aim is to bring the latest innovations and to offer different options for everyone.

I ask you, are you sure this is the right solution? This wasn't even a rebranded version of the 25th variant of a phone released last year, but the Mi 11 Ultra. The Mi 11 Ultra, which is actually the pinnacle of Xiaomi. Even on the absolute top phone, Xiaomi hasn't managed to test the new MIUI version without such an annoying bug as touchscreen issues from an MIUI 12.5 update. I don't know how and in what way the testing is done, but it's clear that with so many devices, there's not enough time and opportunity to get bugs out. I understand that we always need new things, but there has to be a happy medium somewhere.
