The Internet search engine commemorates the 162nd anniversary of the birth of French painter Georges-Pierre Seurat in the logo on its front page.

For frequent visitors to Google's homepage, it's no surprise to see that instead of the familiar logo, there's something a special emblem (doodle) you will find. Witty, casual logos usually appear on the browser home page on holidays and special occasions, but it's not uncommon for Google's creative masters to be inspired by famous people, including writers, musicians and painters.

Today, one of the most famous French painters, Georges-Pierre Seurat who is regarded as a reformer of 19th century modern art and a major figure in neo-impressionism. Seurat was born in Paris on 2 December 1859 and during his tragically short life he established a new aesthetic approach, pointillism.

Seurat's art was characterised by colourful mosaic-like solutions, and he himself approached painting as if he were solving a scientific question, such as a mathematical equation. His most famous work is Sunday afternoon on the island of Grande Jatte which was exhibited in Paris in May 1886 and is considered a major work of pointillism.

Pointillism gets its name from the fact that its representatives use the image in small, point-like (in French: point) are made up of brushstrokes, and the painting as a whole is a composition only in the viewer's mind, or more precisely, in the viewer's brain.
