We wrote about it in November, the deadline has now arrived: from tomorrow, photos and videos synchronised to Photos will be taken from Drive storage (15GB).

Previously, you could use Google Photos to save your photos and videos to the cloud, unlimited, but not in their original quality.

The service allowed unlimited free storage of up to 16 megapixel images and 1080p video. If you had media larger than this, it automatically converted them to the appropriate quality. Until now.

Probably so many people are already using it that it's not worth giving Google unlimited for "free". Statistics show that 28 billion images are uploaded by users every week, which is no small amount of data.

What happens now?

Don't be alarmed, storage of previously uploaded content will remain free, nothing will be lost. Only newly added images and videos will count towards the otherwise free storage space of up to 15GB.

What's more, Google has been warning us since November and calculating how long our current uploading habits can keep us in the space we have. On average, this is 3 years.

Some Pixel users will also have unlimited access from tomorrow.

Have you used it? Do you know of an alternative? Let me know in the comments!
