The arrival of Android 12 is very close, and although we can't download the official software to our smartphones yet, we now know what it's nicknamed: Android Snow Cone.

There have already been rumours that Google is returning to the dessert names of Android updates, and the XDA Developers reported on the Snow Cone name back in February this year, but now it's official.

Dave Burke, Google's vice president of engineering, confirmed the name in a tweet outlining the background of the new software.

Because in America, as I'm sure you know, it's not the plastic-glass flavoured ice-cream that's in fashion on the beaches here. Instead, they scoop some smooth crushed ice into little paper cones and pour various syrups over it.

As we have already written by, a limited release of Android 12 for testers is already on the market, but you'll really have to wait a while for the final version that everyone can download.

As usual, exactly when it will be available for download for everyone hasn't been announced yet, so although the Android 12 nickname is official, we'll have to wait a little longer to see the little ice cream on our phones.

For those with a Pixel device, Google says the update is expected to arrive in the "coming weeks", while owners of other Android devices, including Xiaomi users, will have to wait longer for the update.
