On 13 December 2019, Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi Group China and Managing Director of Redmi, spoke about fast charging technology and the achievements of the two companies. The CEO said that the company has been lagging behind other smartphone manufacturers in the past, but now they are focusing on improvements.

This was further elaborated by the CEO and President of Xiaomi, Xiaomi CEO, who admitted that the company had not focused enough on wireless fast charging technology in the past. So far, a total of 5 models have been unveiled with wireless (Qi) charging. Of these, 3 have been available here: the Mi MIX 2s, the MI MIX 3 and the Mi 9.
These were followed by the Mi MIX 3 5G, and the Mi 9 Pro, the first of which is only available in a few European countries, the Mi 9 Pro in none.

In 2020, in addition to the development of 5G devices, priority will be given to the introduction of phones that support wireless charging.
Although Oppo is still the leader in wired fast charging, Xiaomi is the leader in wireless technology.

The 5G version of the Mi 9 Pro, launched in the autumn, can charge up to 30W wirelessly (and 45W wired), and also offers 10W reverse charging (other devices can be charged by placing the phone on the back).

So for now, Mi 9 Pro 5G is the first smartphone on the market with 30W wireless charging support. The device's 4000mAh battery can be charged in 69 minutes via a 30W Qi pad.

According to the news, the manufacturer of the 100W wired charging is already feverishly developing the  40W wireless technology. This will take a while to roll out, with Xiaomi or Redmi smartphones likely to arrive in 2020 Q2 with this capability.

What could be the catch?

Even the Mi 9, which can charge at 20W Qi, is noticeably hot on the charging pad, as is the Mi Note 10 at 30W wired charging. But I could also mention the Redmi Note 8 Pro with 27W charging, despite the follicle cooling.
We couldn't test the Mi 9 Pro, the back is probably not just lukewarm there either, while we "feed" it with 30W Qi charging, even though liquid cooling is a given there. This is probably one of the problems to solve with 40W.

So we're curious to see if the Mi 10, Mi MIX 4 will have 40W Qi charging by early 2020, or if we'll have to wait until next autumn.
