Xiaomi smartwatches have a long history. It started with a display-less, vibration-only example, which has now grown into a super big display omnipotent bracelet. Once known as the Mi Band, the family is now known by its new name, the Smart Band, and is taking the world by storm every year. The new Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Active is not just for the active lifestyle!

In addition to Xiaomi, Redmi also entered the world of smart bracelets, giving the parent company great competition. I mention this only because the Redmi Watch 3 Active is currently my favorite sports watch. Xiaomi also came out with the Active version of the Smart Band 8 family, which has a slightly dumbed-down function but a larger display than the main version.

If the Smart Band 8 had a big display, it would be a big price increase. So we had to take out some features to get it at a good price. It's also cheaper than the regular bracelet, but they've kept some good features that are really essential for an active lifestyle.

  • 50+ sport mode
  • 5ATM waterproof (for swimming)
  • 1,47″ TFT display
  • 14-day battery
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Accelerometer
  • Vibration motor
  • Bluetooth 5.1 BLE
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • SpO₂ tracking
  • Sleep tracking
  • 100+ watchface

But what's not in it to get it cheaper? E.g. TFT display instead of AMOLED, so no AOD option. Ambient light sensor, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the display, only manually adjustable. No high precision 6-axis sensor either, just plain accelerometer, so it's only 50+ sport, not 150+ like the plain Band 8. And then there's the design, the Smart Band 8 is available in a variety of straps, colours, materials, neck hooks and shoe holders. The Active is only available with a plain TPU strap and in 5 colours globally.

Does this hinder us from using it for sports? Not so much because if it includes our favorite sport, it will measure it well. Like table tennis (ping pong) for me, I will be able to perform the tests accurately. Yes, I already have the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Active and have started testing it. Anyone who is a member of my YouTube channel has already seen my Unboxing Short about it. I will report with the test video and writing next week, as soon as I have drained the bracelet.
