We launched the new Router 4 at the end of June, the second gigabit small router in the Xiaomi family. At the time I was a little worried about the lack of half memory and USB, which turned out to be completely unfounded. The memory serves nothing more than the effective data traffic between the internet service provider and network devices, between Wifi devices and between network devices. There is no need to keep file servers, USB drives, drivers and other services in memory. The lack of USB, well, you have to decide if it is important or not. If we have to, let's stick with the 3G router.

Setting up the router

Having never done this before, I was surprised how easy it was to set up a device with a Chinese interface. Anyone who's moved between two Xiaomi phones knows that it's a snap. I'll send it from here and that's it. Well, that's exactly how it works with the Xiaomi router if you're switching from an older one. The MiWifi android app does it all for you, you just need to leave the two routers switched on and after entering the passwords it transfers all the settings.

If you set it up as a new router, there's no big problem, the android app is perfect for that, but if you want to browse the web interface, I recommend you use a browser that can translate offline from Chinese, because as long as you don't have an internet connection, you won't be able to translate online. The web interface of Xiaomi routers is all in Chinese!

Measurement results

The internet service provider is Digi Ltd., with a subscription of 1000. First measurement on UTP cable using different servers on Speedtest.net. Measurements on router 4 on 21.08.2018, the rest with 3G router.

The first measurement, the results of which are a bit different from the others, interestingly enough, the system chose a local server, i.e. the one in Győr, and the speed is not satisfactory at all. This server may not be able to handle higher speeds, so the rest of the speed tests have been done on large servers in Budapest. With the 3G router I have so far been unable to get speeds close to 700 Mbps, so the 4 was roughly beaten.

Same with Digi's own speed test page.

So speeds of over 800 Mbps are guaranteed, barring any distractions and using the best servers. You can also count on it for torrent downloads, provided of course that there are netizens with similar speeds among the cedars. So even watching 4-8-16K movies online won't be a problem!

Wifi supports 2.4 and 5G connections, so I measured both from a Xiaomi Mi 5s.

A mérések szintén 2018.08.21-én készültek, az első 4 mérés 2.4G kapcsolattal készült, több szerverrel, míg a felső három 5G kapcsolaton és ott is három különböző szerverrel. A középső, 34.1 a győri szerverrel sikerült :) Alatta a többi mérés a 3G routeren keresztül készült.

Then a large file was copied over an internal network, from a wired PC to a phone with Wifi.

Then the same back from phone to PC.

Of course, the router can't do that much by default, so a little fine tuning is needed. Wifi channels need to be set up, there's a great app for Android called Wifi Analyzer.

You can't set the Wifi channel through the app, only on the web interface here:

In conjunction with the Wifi analyzer, set it to a channel where there are no or very few other routers scattering the signal, so you get a better quality connection!

Once you have that, set the WAN speed, because the nice Chinese don't know any network speed higher than 50 meg and that's the bandwidth on the service provider side. Don't let the android app set it automatically either, it can't get it right either. Connect to the router using a PC and enter this address in your browser: http://miwifi.com. Translate the browser interface into English and click on Advanced settings, including QoS smart speed limit. Click on the Set Speed Limit button and type everywhere: 10000

And you're done! You've got one hell of a router!

The Xiaomi Mi Wireless Router 4 is currently the Available on Gearbest for 39.99$.
