According to recent rumours, Xiaomi is already preparing to mass produce its second chipset, the Surge S2. The new chip is the successor to the first Surge S1 SoC, which reached this stage after almost two years of development.

For those of you who don't remember, the Surge S1 processor is manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), based on a 28 nm manufacturing process.

It seems that the time has come for the company to start production of the Surge S2 chips, with some rumours suggesting that this will start in the third quarter of 2017. It is likely to feature eight cores, with four Cortex A53 2.2 GHz and four Cortex A53 1.4 GHz cores and a Mali-T860 MP4 graphics processor. The chip will support Cat. 4 LTE network, LPDDR3 RAM and eMMC 5.0 storage.

The Surge S2 SoC is based on the 16nm architecture and may also appear in the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 6c and Mi 6s models.
