Until the launch of the Xiaomi 12S series next week, we'll be getting some tech news from Xiaomi almost every day. Today, the focus was on camera sensors and new optical lenses. There were no big surprises, with the best Sony sensor for the Ultra and the silver medal for the Plain and Pro. Still, the big surprise was the Leica Summicron lens.

Xiaomi is totally serious about the idea of "best mobile phone with camera". That's why it has teamed up with Leica. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra, intended to be the successor to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, will surely take the top spot on the podium again. Sony's latest image sensor, the IMX 989, will help it do that. Not much is known about the sensor yet, as it will make its debut in this phone. It is rumoured to have a resolution of 50 MP, with a 1″ diameter of the light sensor surface.

The other big new product is the Summicron mobile phone lens, the brainchild of Xiaomi-Leica. It's a very special 8-member optical unit with an ultra low-reflection coating on both sides. The result is a reflectivity of up to 0.2%, light transmission of up to 93%, reduced glare and elimination of purple streaks.

The Xiaomi 12S and Pro will be equipped with Sony IMX 707 image sensors. We've seen this before, as it's in the previous series, the Xiaomi 12 Pro in your phone. So it's not going to be a big trueway, but we hope they raise the bar a bit.
