To celebrate International Women's Day, Xiaomi International has released a Women in Tech video featuring three women who have played key roles in the life of Xiaomi.
With this film, Xiaomi aims to inspire innovation and connectivity around the world, and to celebrate the outstanding talents who have played an important role in shaping the industry. Xiaomi's message to techies is."find what you are passionate about, believe in yourself and always look for the best solution for you!"
A pioneering vision
Role models are a powerful motivator for those working in science and maths, as well as in engineering and technology. Yi Yan, General Manager of Xiaomi's Shanghai Regional Headquarters, says it is important that there is no "ceiling" in technological development, that innovations help everyone to live a better life, and that it is important to break down "boundaries".
"It is this mission that drives us to work together to create a better world. An inclusive approach to fostering technological diversity is the ethos that is integral to Xiaomi's leadership philosophy. Xiaomi's open and transparent organizational structure also gives women the opportunity to make the most of their time working with their peers." - says Yi Yan.
Asked about what constitutes a favourable environment for women in the tech industry, Yi Yan pointed out that a supportive environment at all stages of a career is essential to allow creativity to flourish and encourage professional development. "Collaboration and camaraderie is an integral part of Xiaomi's leadershipphilosophy, as it creates a learning environment that benefitseveryone".
Relentless creativity
Providing a progressive, dynamic and supportive environment for all employees - this is Xiaomi's commitment, beyond its shared vision. In the video, Chen Lu, Director of Ecosystems, points out that Xiaomi's corporate culture is the combined success of the organisation's diversity and talent. "Xiaomi attracts the top talent in the industry, so I'm always surrounded by diverse thinking. This environment helps me to look at problems from different angles. Xiaomi's engineers approach a problem from angles I hadn't considered before." says Chen Lu, who also draws inspiration from the diversity of ideas around him as a technical packaging designer in his own field.
In addition to all this, Xiaomi is also promoting another progressive idea: breaking through the barriers to creative technologies. On the importance of this approach, Chen Lu has just shared his experience in packaging design: "Before I joined Xiaomi, I had a very limited idea of creativity. Until then, I thought creativity was at most about creating new visual experiences. At Xiaomi, I learned that the main purpose of creativity is to solve practical problems, create new experiences and design things that make your everyday life better.".
Being a catalyst for success
There is a growing need for an inclusive and transformative mindset in technology, and this is where the perseverance and passion of women is admirable," says Abi Go, spokesperson for Xiaomi International.
"As an adult, I was confronted with the fact that women are not seen as partners in technology. While many women are very tech-savvy, they are passionate about gadgets and other tools and services that help them in their lives and work. The world is also full of talented women in this field" - Abi recalls his experience.
As an industry leader, Xiaomi provides a development opportunity and platform for many young talents, and its holistic and inclusive approach is crucial to the company's success. In practice, this means strong empathy and understanding the perspectives of others. Abi sees this concept as key, especially at the product development stage. "We are constantly communicating, discussing, debating and giving feedback from a user's perspective, so we can improve products together. And when it comes to marketing, we take the technology jargon and translate it into language that users can easily understand" - Abi Go points out.
