After much deliberation, the Wikipedia Foundation has decided to stop accepting crypto donations.

According to online encyclopaedia operator has decided to stop accepting donations in the form of cryptocurrency, as digital money reflects badly on them. Wikipedia has been accepting cryptocurrency donations through the organisation's BitPay account, and essentially all known virtual currencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, Dogecoin, Litcoin and USDC, have been accepted.

"In 2014, we started accepting cryptocurrencies based on requests from our volunteers and donor communities. The current decision is based on feedback from these same communities" - the organisation wrote. The consultation was launched at the suggestion of Molly White, a respected member of the Wikipedia editorial team and an outspoken crypto-sceptic. A 9to5Google Article from the Wikipedia Foundation has decided to stop crypto donations after three months of discussion, due to, among other things, the energy-intensive nature of cryptocurrencies and the unregulated nature of the technology and risky speculation.

Wikipedia is a free, editable encyclopaedia that was launched on 15 January 2001 as part of the Nupedia project. Although its creators, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, intended it to be a kind of lower level of Nupedia, the site, which is not only editable by experts, has quickly gained enormous popularity, with more than 540 million pages written in 300 languages, and is still one of the most visited sites on the Internet, with more than half a billion visitors a month.
