The hidden camera under the screen is nothing new, it's been in the works for quite a while, and not just at Xiaomi. But today the company announced that the technology has reached a stage where mass production can begin. The third generation screen, which can hide the camera, has been perfected from its previously known teething problems.

Until now, Xiaomi has mostly struggled with the problem that current OLED screens have not been able to create a translucent layer that allows enough light to pass through to the camera sensor.

Not only has the light been poor so far, but the picture has been blurry. But these problems have now been completely overcome.

Xiaomi's third-generation screen uses a new, proprietary pixel layout that allows the image sensor to pass light through the sub-pixel gap. The advantage is that each pixel still retains the full RGB colour palette without sacrificing pixel density.

The pixel count in front of the camera on the new screen has been doubled horizontally and vertically, so you get the same pixel density as any other screen of similar quality.

So the technology is ready and mass production can begin. In the pictures above you can see a prototype of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra phone, but the better question is: what kind of phone will we see this in again? Maybe that's why the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is so delayed? But one thing we can be sure of is that the next Mi family of screens will feature this in 2021, and maybe Redmi will adopt it in the middle or second half of the year. We'll see!
