It's been a problem since the advent of smartphones, and although the situation has been improving in recent years, we're not much further ahead: updates either come or they don't. And if they do, for how long? If long, we're happy, if not, we're not. There is not always guaranteed support, and in most cases it depends on the 'goodness' of the manufacturer how long they will support a particular device.

Unfortunately, after a while, as devices get older, we will undoubtedly run out of software support, often sooner rather than later, and that's a huge problem. But, what can we do as lay users to be safe, without all the hocus-pocus? This is the question we are looking for answers to today.

Let's say you have a two or three year old phone, which has just run out of support, so it's not supposed to get any more updates, no MIUI, no security patches.

How dangerous is it to use?

Theoretically, it is not safe, but a conscious user, with due care, can certainly keep their device safe for a year or two. What does this mean in practice?

Since most vulnerabilities are exploited by the user downloading too much, don't do this. By only installing apps from the Play Store and from a trusted source (e.g. F-Droid), the chances of an attack are greatly reduced. No Happymod, Aptoide, Lucky Patcher and similar wonders! Although, if we want to open up to the East and share our data with our Russian comrades, this could be a fair deal ;)

Is it worth using an antivirus?

My personal opinion is no. Because even the best anti-virus software cannot protect you from stupidity. Of course it can't hurt, but it's not necessary. I would again draw your attention to awareness.

Application updates

While the operating system will no longer be updated, the applications will be for a few years, and they will receive the latest in-house security patches. So it's crucial to install them regularly.

In summary

While there are many things we did not learn, one of the things we did learn is particularly important: user awareness. Just think: it was impossible to conquer Troy in 10 years, but one night was enough to cheat. Let's pay attention, or, more sense than Brussels! That is the key to security.
