As you may or may not know, Xiaomi has spread around the world as the best Android-based system developer. MIUI is still a fantastic system to this day, but in the early days, many developers ported it to their own phones or made a custom rom. Outside of Xiaomi phones, there were plenty of phones available to replace the manufacturer-provided system with a better, faster, more colourful, smellier MIUI.

As Android is an open source operating system, many versions are available on the web, with the best collections available on the XDA forum. It's almost where it all started, MIUI 3/4 for my then Sony Ericsson Xperia X8, which is how I got to know MIUI. The ROM in this article does not refer to the phone's backend, but to the installable file of the Android system, the firmware.

The factory wrecks are usually made by the phone manufacturer, with the right components and unique solutions. Readers of this page are mostly familiar with the MIUI system, of which only the Global Stable line is now left, but there are other solutions. MIUI is also a Custom ROM, compared to the base Android. It has a completely redesigned interface, new features, custom apps and services, just like any custom Android ROM.

For those who have dealt with individual/custom scrap, this little list will not be unfamiliar, but for those who have not looked into the matter, it may be a little help to know what to look for.

  • LineageOS
  • OmniROM
  • Paranoid Android
  • Resurrection Remix OS
  • Pixel Experience
  • AOSP Extended
  • Havoc OS
  • Bootleggers ROM
  • Dirty Unicorn
  • ArrowOS
  • Pixel Experience
  • Potato Open Sauce Project
  • EvolutionX

Just to name a few. But what's the difference between factory and custom wrecks?

Why stick with the factory system?

  • Security: One of the main reasons to stick with the factory system is that the manufacturer guarantees the security of your data (with 1-2 exceptions for now), privacy is taken into account, among other things, which ensures a seamless user experience.
  • Guarantee: Most manufacturers will only validate the pre-defined warranty with their own factory system.
  • Factory functions: The factory roms have premium features not found in the standard Android system. These features include a Launcher with special features, a proprietary cloud solution and services.
  • Manufacturer applications: Factory roms contain special pre-installed applications that can make it easier to use your phone and services, whether Samsung, Apple or Xiaomi.

Why try a custom rom?

  • ROOT right: A custom ROM gives users root access to Android devices. This is a powerful option that gives users full control over their phone.
  • Customizability: Custom ROMs are flexible and customisable to any degree. Users can delete unwanted bloatware applications included with stock ROMs and further refine their Android devices.
  • Better performance: Custom ROMs allow users to install and remove applications, limit background applications and make other performance changes. These custom ROMs are usually no more comprehensive than factory ROMs because they have almost no pre-installed applications.
  • Regular and prolonged updates: one of the main advantages of running custom ROMs is that they are updated regularly. While manufacturers can forget about older phones and only release updates for the latest models, custom ROM developers have a community of people who demand updates on a continuous basis (except Xiaomi).

It's good to know that you need to open the bootloader of your phone to try custom ROMs. The bootloader is the first thing that loads when you turn on your phone, and it's the first line of defence that makes it extremely difficult to crack. Also, there are quite a few applications that check the bootloader to determine whether or not the system is secure and cannot run with an open bootloader. So think about it before you start opening and installing custom roms, if something goes wrong you will have a few sleepless nights or a few thousand dollars in the service department.

These are just the advantages I've listed, but I'll leave it to you to list the disadvantages either below the article or in a Facebook post. Let's see who doesn't like the factory or custom ruins!
