Last autumn, Android 9 came to the Mi Box 3, rather unexpectedly. As we've come to expect, this update didn't go smoothly, and some people are now complaining that the "patches" released since then are hitting the device.

Not a good trend

Somehow software updates have always been a problem with Mi Boxes, but they are still excellent products with great value for money.

Xiaomi's updates have, well, not been doing too well recently on certain devices, erm, Mi A3, which may disprove the otherwise very important principle that you should update as soon as possible and that up-to-date software is the key to security. Because it is.

The only problem is that if the manufacturer releases insufficiently tested updates, and devices "break", the user is left with the impression that they should not update what is not good.

The current situation

A few days ago, an update was released that sends the device into the bootloop, and getting out of there is quite difficult. More information on Reddit on this issue.

I have no problems with Pie, although I am using the second update released in the autumn, for some reason no new version has arrived since then. If you do, I think you should wait a day or two to make sure you don't have a problem.

It needs to be updated

Most internet-connected devices are vulnerable because they are not running the latest systems and applications. This was also true in the case of the WannaCry ransomware, which showed the world perfectly how little people care about keeping software up to date.

It's worth waiting a while if you want to be sure, because, as you can see, it happens that a patch or a new patch goes wrong, but you shouldn't be against updates either, because there are a lot of security holes in a neglected system, which may be exploited by adware today, but tomorrow by spyware, and the day after that by malware that monitors and forwards network traffic.
