Xiaomi has been off MTK processors for a very long time, they are a bit clunky compared to the Snapdragon family, they couldn't (wouldn't) upgrade to Android and I could go on and on. There were rumours earlier about a MTK procis about new Xiaomi phone, which many were not happy about.

The Xiaomi Cereus phone, codenamed Cereus, is powered by a MediaTek ARM MT6765, has 3GB of RAM and runs Android 8.1.0, according to GeekBench. The SoC is a good question, as it's not yet listed on the manufacturer's website, but 8 cores at 2GHz can't be that bad. Rumours suggest that the new processor will be similar to the Helio P60 based on 12nm technology, so we could be looking at a cheaper version that reaches the high-end level.

However, on Geekbench, the same SoC was already listed with a 2.3GHz clock speed, so it's not clear which one will be the final one. Other rumours about this Xiaomi phone suggest that it is not the Redmi 5X, but the smallest member of the next series, the Redmi 6A. But there are not many arguments in favour of the Redmi 6A, the Redmi 5A is only 4 months old, so it would be too early to replace it and the Redmi 4X has not yet been replaced.

We wouldn't be surprised to see it launch alongside the Mi 6X on the 25th, as the Redmi 4X has been out for over a year, so it's about time the Redmi X series continued.
