When a device's software support ends, you can do one of two things: live with it, or replace the software with a custom ROM. The latter was made possible on the two phones.

LineageOS is one of the most popular open-source Android systems, most similar to the so-called factory Android developed by Google. It's a completely basic system with basic applications, no vendor software, no unnecessary bloatware and no other built-in goodies.

A phone usually gets a maximum of 2-3 years of updates, with the exception of a few. After that, it becomes vulnerable or doesn't benefit from new features. However, by taking matters into your own hands and installing a reliable custom ROM, your device can get the latest Android, monthly security patches and even get faster by being free from the burden of unnecessary software. Instant win, right?

The phones mentioned in the title, the Mi 10 Lite 5G (subject code-named monet), and the Mi 10T Lite/Mi 10i/Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G (but we'll leave it to the code name, so it's called gauguin) phones, LineageOS 18.1 is now available.

It's not Android 12 yet, but Android 11, but the important difference is that it will receive monthly security updates and Android 12 could be available soon.

If you want to know more about custom ruins, discussed in this article.
