Xiaomi has been thinking about global expansion from the start, and a strong patent portfolio is essential. This seems to be going well, as the company is gradually acquiring the relevant patents. Xiaomi CEO, Xiaomi's CEO, says it currently holds 6324 patents, of which 53% are outside China. The majority of Xiaomi's patents are registered in China, but the company also holds patents in Europe, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, Mexico, Australia and South Korea.

Interesting fact:
BBK subsidiary Vivo recently unveiled the Vivo APEX with a full screen and a retractable selfie camera. It has also been revealed that Xiaomi has a similar patent in its portfolio. The patent was approved in 2015, but it was only recently made public when the Vivo APEX surfaced.
The Xiaomi CEO is a significant improvement from last year, when the CEO mentioned 4,806 patents at the Mi 5X / MIUI 9 launch. He also mentioned the patent acquisition agreement Nokia has reached, which would help it to expand overseas (e.g. US). So, the tech giant has acquired 1,518 new patents since July last year, following the launch of the Mi 5X.

In addition to Nokia, Xiaomi has several patent agreements with Microsoft and other patent companies. In addition, the company has announced that it is increasing its resources for research and development. Xiaomi recently opened a new R&D centre in Shenzhen, China, for this purpose.
