The most important news of the day in the Xiaomi world was definitely the Mi 11, with so many rumours and information coming out before the announcement that the debut article was the 15th in a series of articles on Mi 11. Because of this, less attention was paid to the fact that Xiaomi has also brought something new in the software field, MIUI 12.5 was presented.

Design and performance

I don't know if anyone is annoyed by all the factory apps that can't be deleted. Not me in particular, but some people are driven out of the world by it. Xiaomi's engineers have improved on that, and in MIUI 12.5 there are only 9 apps that can't be deleted. That's for the Chinese version, for us it's likely to be slightly more due to Google apps. The presentation even included a comparison with iOS and Android systems with different interfaces.

New super wallpapers

The super wallpapers were one of the big new features of MIUI 12, and I have to say, they're really unique and look really good.

A háttérkép természetesen napszaknak megfelelően változik. A Xiaomi ígéretet tett 2 helyre, a görög Hajóroncs-öböl a Navaggio-öbölre és az olasz Blade’s Edge hegységre, továbbá 2021 első féléve során több újabb hely várható még.

Notification sounds, haptic feedback

Xiaomi engineers probably like to see the world, but they certainly like remote mountain ranges and rainforests. The revamped notification sounds come from four locations - the rainforests of South America, Australia, East Africa and the Arctic. The new sounds are said to have been produced with the help of zoologists and sound artists at the world's largest library, the British Library.

The sounds of natural elements such as wood, sand and water are used in the making. These sounds are mainly designed for stereo sound, but with this production process I think they will sound good on 1 speaker.

To improve the user experience, Xiaomi has refined the different vibrations, haptic feedbacks, which are expected to be felt in all areas of the system. Importantly, and with respect to the visually impaired, the various haptic feedbacks have been developed with the aim of making the use of the Xiaomi phone as seamless as possible. No specific details have been revealed at this time.

Data protection

A MIUI 12.5 négy területen igyekszik javítani a rendszer biztonságát: a vágólap, a készüléken tárolt fájlok, a böngésző, illetve a helyzetmeghatározás. Ezutóbbi 3 egyértelmű, viszont belegondolva az első is igazán fontos, hisz’ rendszeresen másolnak a felhasználók mondjuk bankszámlaszámot e-mailből netbank alkalmazásába, ami nemigen örülnének, ha illetéktelenek kezébe kerülne. A vágólap védelem naplót fog vezetni azon alkalmazásokról, amik túlzásba viszik a vágólap olvasását.

For the next feature, I'm not sure if it will appear in the global version:
Fuzzy Position is a feature that allows users to disguise their exact location by moving a few metres.

Another new feature called Sandbox is a security mechanism where a restricted environment is created to prevent sensitive data from leaking. This is done by separating different data, such as photos, so that an application can only access the file that the user gives it permission to access.

Xiaomi believes that 53% of China's top 1000 websites have access to personal data (I don't know where that assumption came from). To prevent this, it uses a built-in security app to prevent such sites from accessing personal data through Mi Browser.

What doesn't affect European users so much is that in MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi's app store will now have a stricter privacy measure in place to prevent data theft through apps downloaded from there.

MIUI Notes

A Xiaomi megújította a jegyzetelős alkalmazását is, a felhasználók ezentúl hozzáadhatnak gyorsjegyzeteket, illetve gondolattérképet is készíthetnek. Ezutóbbi amúgy egy kifejezetten jó ötlet! Mint minden jegyzetelős appban, itt is lehet rajzolni, és ezentúl 4 féle “ecsetet” is kapunk a skiccekez. Ezentúl megjelentek újabb betűtípusok is a jegyzeteléshez.

MIUI+

That's essentially why iOS and macOS users, among others, love their ecosystem so much, when mobile and PC work together beautifully. Something like this will happen between a mobile device running MIUI 12.5 and a Windows 10 PC. Various notifications on mobile, including call and SMS notifications, will arrive on the computer, and you can open mobile apps from a computer. You can copy between phone and computer, view screenshots taken on your phone, and view web pages opened on your mobile device.

Xiaomi further promises that the file manager and notes will get a full-fledged computer client, which will allow you to access files and notes stored on your phone via a computer. The main point of this is mobility. Someone can start working on a document on their mobile phone and then come home and continue on their computer, or they can receive a phone number via email, quickly transfer it to their mobile and make a call.

Supported devices

For now, we know which phones are participating in the MIUI 12.5 closed beta. This means that these phones will definitely get it, however, if your phone is not on the list, you may not get it, and the list may be wider, because there are 21 devices in total. My guess is that whichever device got MIUI 12 will get 12.5, but that's just my guess, not confirmed by any source.

Here is the list:

  • Xiaomi Mi 10
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition
  • Redmi K30
  • Redmi K30 5G
  • Redmi K30 Pro 5G
  • Redmi K30i 5G
  • Redmi K30S Ultra
  • Redmi K30 Ultra
  • Xiaomi Mi 9
  • Xiaomi Mi 9 SE
  • Xiaomi Mi CC9e
  • Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro
  • Redmi K20
  • Redmi K20 Pro
  • Redmi 10X 5G
  • Redmi 10X Pro 5G
  • Redmi Note 9 5G
  • Redmi Note 7
  • Redmi Note 7 Pro

Publication date

Xiaomi is releasing the closed beta as an OTA update today (28 December), with the open beta to be released by mid-January 2021. I won't guess the release date of the final version, rumours will come anyway. :D
