We'll have to wait no less than 3 years for the next phone with a selfie camera under the screen. The Xiaomi Mix 4 phone with this feature was released in August 2021, but since then there's been a hush around the technology. But rumours have emerged that the next Xiaomi phone with an under-screen camera could come this year.

In-screen camera technology is not cheap and is not yet mature enough to catch up with the quality of a regular cut-out screen camera. So it hasn't even been used in many phones yet, but many Chinese brands have. OPPO, Vivo, ZTE, Xiaomi and even the cuckoo Samsung. Because it's Korean.

Our favourite Chinese blogger, Digital Chat station recently posted on its Weibo page that Xiaomi could launch a new phone with an under-screen camera this year. As usual, his wording is chaotic and ambiguous, as we have come to expect from the Chinese. But it makes it clear that it's Xiaomi. But at the end, he did say that it is not expected to be the Xiaomi MIX 5.

The Xiaomi MIX 5 has theoretically already appeared in the IMEI database, which shows that it will not be released this year, but in March 2025. But of course, until we know more about it, we can only assume that maybe the MIX 5 will already come with the best possible selfie camera hidden under the screen.

Xiaomi MIX 4

The MIX 4 has become a phone with unique features. It is the first phone from the manufacturer with an under-display selfie camera and Ultra Wide Band support, and the world's first phone powered by the Snapdragon 888+ processor.

The phone features a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support. The screen is a 10-bit TrueColor panel with a contrast ratio of 500,000:1. And Gorilla Glass Victus provides adequate protection.

There are three cameras on the back, a 108-megapixel HMX f/1.9 main camera with 7P lens and OIS, an 8-megapixel 50x telephoto camera with OIS offering 5x optical zoom, and a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera. The ultra-wide-angle camera's free-form lens means distortion is reduced to around 1% compared to 20% for a plain lens.

One of the main highlights of the MIX 4 is its under-display camera technology, which Xiaomi has dubbed CUP (camera under panel). It features a 20MP 1.6μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel sensor.
