In the light of recent events, it is perhaps not so surprising that the Yahoo! Finance says Facebook is the worst company of 2021.
The Yahoo! Finance at the end of each year, publish the best and worst companies of the previous year, based on their market performance and other results for that year. According to Yahoo's judges, Microsoft was the best company this year, while Facebook deserved the "worst company" award.
Facebook received 8 percent of the total vote, with most people criticising the social giant for having a negative impact on the mental world of young people. However, there were also a fair number of people who said it was possible that Facebook (now Meta) would recognise its mistakes and continue to act as a responsible company in the future.
In recent months, negative voices against Facebook have been raised sharply after a former employee of the company, Frances Haugen, disclosed serious internal documents. The leaked documents revealed that the company that owns Instagram Facebook is aware that Instagram has a negative impact on young people's mental health.
Since the incident, the company has retreated in several areas and changed its name to Meta, in order to give more focus to its new, grandiose project, the virtual reality-based metaverzum. Zuckerberg's vision is that virtual reality would cover almost all aspects of life: it would be both a home for outdoor activities and socialising, and a "natural" place to work.
