The curved design has proved to be a dead end for televisions, as is illustrated by the fact that this type of set has now been phased out of the market. However, curved devices can still be found in the range of monitors, which are a close relative. This is no coincidence, as there seems to be a continuing demand for curved monitors.

Xiaomi is one of the manufacturers that offers such products, precisely so that they can cover customer needs as accurately as possible.

In this article, we look at the benefits of a curved enclosure, the drawbacks and who can benefit from them.

Degree of bending

The degree of curvature is given by the index "R" and provides information on how many millimetres in diameter the enclosure could "lie on" the arc of a circle. So, if a monitor has a curvature of 1000R, it is curved to the same extent as the arc of a 1000 mm or 10 metre circle. Hence the smaller this number, the more pronounced the degree of bending.

Benefits

Design: this is a very important aspect and there is no denying it. The curved screen models because they are much, much more spectacular than traditional flat products. They are more eye-catching, trendier and even better at conveying status. This is particularly true when they are complemented by other extra design elements, such as light-emitting diodes or special feet.

Bigger image: also of particular importance is that the curvature of the display means that the image takes up more of the user's field of view. In addition, this means that all points on the screen are at roughly the same distance from the user, which improves the gaming experience and is also useful when consuming multimedia content.

Disadvantage

Unfortunately, there is no rose without a thorn, and this is proven in black and white with curved monitors.

Only from the middle: Only good  picture, if someone is looking at the display from the middle, from the front. If you look at it from the side, you'll find that the lines are distorted, and from a very wide angle, the casing itself covers part of the screen.

Viewing angle: In our experience, curved products perform worse in this respect.

Price: To buy a curved monitor, you usually have to dig a little deeper into your wallet than you would for a traditional monitor.

Who is it recommended for

All in all, we recommend monitors with a curved screen for those who would use it alone most of the time. So in an office where you need to show your display to your colleagues, it's not the right one. They can be integrated into a larger system with multiple displays, but only if the other elements are curved. We think that for gaming, editing media files and filming such a product is best, for running office applications, word processing, database management it's not the right one.

In terms of image quality, such devices can now represent the highest level. A Xiaomi Mi BHR4269GL for example, boasts a 34-inch WQHD screen with 3440 x 1440 pixel resolution, 144 Hz maximum refresh rate and FreeSync support.
