Many users are probably asking themselves: why is India so important?

The answer is simple: India is the world's second largest smartphone market after China.

Karn Chauhan, Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research, said:

India is the world's second largest smartphone market after China, with over 430 million smartphone users, but this only represents 45% of the total potential smartphone market.

Karn Chauhan also adds to the reasons for Xiaomi's growth as this is a key year in 2018, with the low prices the company offers in its devices:

In 2018, this was one of the main reasons why not only new users switched to smartphones, but there was a healthy upgrade within price tiers, especially from entry-level smartphones to the mid-tier segment

Anshika Jain, another research analyst at Counterpoint Research, followed suit, saying:

We saw the participation of key players, while as competition intensified, smaller brands exited the market. However, this does not mean that there is no room for new manufacturers. Realme, which entered the Indian market in the second quarter of 2018, became the fifth largest manufacturer in India by the last quarter of 2018. All this faster to reach - more than four million customers - than any other brand.

Chinese brands currently account for nearly two-thirds of the Indian mobile phone market, which was 54% in 2017.

Overall, the number of mobile phones sold in India exceeded 330 million units for the first time. This accounts for nearly 44% of all smartphones sold in 2018.
