The batteries of Xiaomi and its cronies are not forever, they can lose a lot of capacity after a few years if not maintained. There are times when this happens sooner than we had hoped and that's when we take it in for a battery replacement. From that point on, you can forget about fast charging if you put in an aftermarket battery.

XDA developerss guys have spotted code indicating that the MIUI Security app does not only check the battery status. Of course, in addition to protecting the battery, managing charging, turning on/off fast charging, the battery itself. The app also checks every time whether the phone has a factory battery.

If a non-factory battery is installed, a warning will let you know and from then on, fast charging will not be available, only normal charging. The message will also tell you that battery replacement should only be carried out by an authorised service centre.

This restriction will currently only apply to a few phones: Wed 9, Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. In addition, for now, the new Mi Security app will only be available on Chinese phones, but there's no word on whether it will be rolled out globally. While this move is a far cry from what Apple and Samsung have done sneakily, it is a security move.

This is necessary because if an aftermarket battery from one place or another gets humped, catches fire, God forbid, explodes, Xiaomi will be at fault. If you send the phone 67 W, it's not sure the Alis 10$ freeshipping battery can take it. Then comes the pop and scare rumour about Xiaomi.

There has been no official announcement in China yet, but we hope that it will be made in the coming days and that the water will be cleared. We will come back with details as soon as we know anything.
