Facebook has made a huge mistake by recognising as true a fake website that misused Elon Musk's name and even spread a bitcoin scam.

Facebook claims to be doing everything it can to successfully combat fake profiles that are spreading on the platform, but even so, there are still one or two that slip through the cracks. The latest case is reported in the The Verge reportedthat a site that has been operating since 2019 has recently Elon Musk and he did it in a way that was officially confirmed by Facebook. So the user visiting the page was essentially led to believe that he was on Elon Musk's official site.

While the blue check mark might have made the site look authentic at first glance, there were several clear signs that it was not actually run by the Tesla CEO. On the one hand, the creator of the page described the profile as a fan page on his business card, and on the other hand, it was clear that the page was not managed from Elon Musk's headquarters in Texas, but from Egypt. In the light of all this, it is particularly puzzling how the fake page could be confirmed as the official Facebook profile of the billionaire businessman.

And if that wasn't embarrassing enough, the fake Elon Musk site even spread a scam page promising users that if they sent them bitcoins, they would get double the amount back.

Although Facebook had not commented on the incident at the time of writing, the fake page has disappeared from the social networking site, but it is not yet known whether it was deleted by Facebook or the operator.
