Research firm Counterpoint has released its global coverage statistics for the third quarter of 2017. The stats cover the entire mobile market on the planet, showing each vendor's achievements, market position and share. The results, of course, include both smartphones and average phones, so manufacturers that also produce very low-end devices obviously take a bigger share of the market apple.
Samsung still retains its market leadership with a global market share of 21%, still followed by Apple with 12%, and then the biggest Chinese tech giant Huawei at the bottom of the podium with 10%. Next in line for the top spot are OPPO with 8%, while Xiaomi and Vivo are tied for fifth place with 7% of the global mobile market and Lenovo in a tie for sixth place with 4%. The remaining 31% is the total of all handset manufacturers in the world. Broken down by the largest regions, Apple of course dominates the market in North America with 34%, but Samsung is close behind with 24%, while LG and ZTE are also in demand with 17 and 11% respectively, and Lenovo is the frontrunner.In Europe, the situation is completely different, with Samsung leading the way with 33%, but Apple is well behind with 17%. Not far behind, Huawei is holding the apple, but Lenovo has a similar slice of the market here as in the US, but ahead of ZTE. Asia is a different story. Here, the Eastern brands are the best sellers and competition is very tight. Oppo still leads in sales by 2-3% ahead of its competitors. Vivo has just overtaken Samsung in 2017 with 13% share, with Xiaomi coming level with it with 12-12% market share. Then Huawei was left at the very end with 11%.
In 2018, it will not be surprising if Xiaomi achieves even better results in the global market, as it has barely set foot in a few European or American markets, not to mention its growing position in the East. If they were to take this more seriously this year, they would push for universal network support, including the mysterious B20/800MHz band, and start selling new devices on Global worldwide.
