Oh yes, finally! This year's most exciting Global phone, the Redmi Note 9S, is here! To be more precise, the first phone that has something special, innovative, improved, design... The next one will be the global version of the Redmi K30 Pro, maybe called Xiaomi Mi 10T, well, more people want that than the current top phone, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro.
The presentation of the phone will consist of 3 parts. This is the first one, where I will show you the phone from the outside, its features and specifications. The second article/video will be about its performance and battery capacity, which will include gaming tests, SOT time and other such tidbits. Then in the third one will be the camera test, daytime, night time videos will show you that this is what Redmi, your local darling, is capable of. Let's run with it! (I apologize for the microphone glitch in the video, it was only when editing that I realized that the microphone was not plugged in properly...)
The phone's box contains the familiar global exterior on a white background, with a picture of the phone on the front and a small product leaflet at the short end.
The box contains the usual contents, a transparent silicone case, a fast charger, a USB cable and some collectibles.
The charger has an interesting 22.5 W, but the phone can only draw 18 W. So the 5020 mAh battery shouldn't be hard to fill up during noperc.
The silicone case that came with the phone is great for what it was designed for, except for one thing, it doesn't protect the camera either, it sticks out of the case so much. However, it does have a USB dust door like its predecessors, so charging and data connection are protected.
The Redmi Note 9S's camera system is almost its strong point, with a 16MP selfie camera with 1.0μm pixel resolution and f/2.48 aperture. Its capabilities include. Video resolution is 1080p and can record in slow motion, but only at 720p resolution. The rear quad camera is more complex and interesting:
- Sony IMX586, 48MP, 1/2″ sensor, FOV 79°, f/1.79 aperture, 6-piece lens, AF, 1.6μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel, 0.8μm pixel size
- 8MP, ultra wide lens, 1.12μm, FOV 119°, f/2.2 aperture
- 5MP, macro lens, 1.12μm, f/2.4 aperture, AF (2-10cm)
- 2MP, depth of field, 1.75μm, f/2.4 aperture
We find the right sensor and lens for every situation, so you can always get the best out of it. And the four rear camera features are: Night Mode, Document Mode, Cinematic Portrait, 48MP HD, Intelligent Ultra Wide Mode, Portrait Mode with Background Blur, Panorama Mode, Pro Mode, Photo Timer, Self-Lay, Burst Mode, Face Detection, HDR, Ultra Wide Width Distortion Correction, Custom Watermark, AI Watermark, Kaleidoscope, Full Screen Frame, Rear Camera AI Scene Detection (27 detectable tags), Macro Camera.
It also offers a wide range of video recording options: movie-like 4K video, very wide angle recording, macro recording, short video mode, 4K recording. 4K 30fps, 1080P 30fps/60fps, 720P 30fps. Slow motion recording: 1080P 120fps, 720P
120fps / 240fps / 960fps.
It's refreshing that Redmi keeps the option to listen to music, even while charging, so the 3.5mm Jack connector is placed at the bottom alongside the USB Type-C connector. To the right is the main microphone and mono speaker.
The top width of the phone is not left fallow either, next to the secondary microphone there is also a good old infra transmitter, so you can control the TV, air conditioning, or have fun in a hardware store... :mrgreen:
The debut of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G in the Redmi Note 9S (China Pro) is just the tip of the iceberg. Compared to the SD712, CPU performance has increased by 36% and GPU performance has increased by 18%. I'll have a good look at the performance article!
And the battery is something awesome! 5020 mAh and with the SD720G SoC you can even stretch the screen time to infinity! So far I've only used it to watch movies, but that's boring, I've pretty much watched all the episodes of The Wicked Family, well not all, but it lasted 18 hours and I put it back on the charger at 15%. With the included charger, and long-pack, you can recharge it to 100%. I'll go into this in detail in the performance article.
Its screen is thankfully a brilliant IPS LCD, which is a tiny bit smaller than a scoop, with a diagonal of 6.67″. 2400 x 1080 FHD+, 1500:1 contrast ratio, NTSC: 84%, TÜV Rheinland low blue light certification, Reading Mode 2.0 and Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 for scratch protection.
The DotDisplay is a new addition to the Redmi world and it's pretty well done. Although at first glance, with the factory software, the shading around the camera was very visible, it has been reduced with an update. Even so, there is still a small and only white background. The factory film is not perfectly in place either, but there you go!
Summary, individual opinion
Yes, I've been waiting for this phone and the Redmi K30 Pro is the next one I'm pining for. After 2 years of a monolithic Mi series, Redmi now gives us the level of what we've come to expect from Xiaomi, new technology, innovation, quality, affordable price. This has all become the privilege of Redmi, it has now grown from the cheap mid-range where it has stagnated. I secretly hope that it will not evolve further and catch up with the Mi series pricing, I know for someone it is all about being the latest and greatest of everything. And for those who want an all IS good phone that is special and well priced, feel free to choose Redmi phones. The looks of the Redmi Note 9S are nice, very nice. The aurora blue colour is beautiful, the way the light glints off it and the blue-green shades that line the back of the phone... :oops: The symmetrical layout is very advantageous, the rear and selfie camera are both exactly in the middle, although the wobble is very rough in both directions, but the case that comes with it compensates for this somewhat. The grip is great, even for my small palm, the aspect ratio is thin and long, so it's easy to grip, but to use it, it's only usable with two hands. Filming and playing games on it is refreshing because of the screen size, you can see everything on it and you don't have to hold it close to your eyes to tire them out quickly, it's excellent from a distance. The only thing that spoils the overall picture is the screen...
And the notification LED, integrated into the speech speaker. Besides being in one colour (which is no surprise), it is only visible from the front. From either side you won't notice it flashing because you've received some kind of notification! In a word, well done phone, but my final opinion will be after the battery, performance and camera test 100%!
