Remember the Redmi K20 | Xiaomi Mi 9T for phones? A little help! This phone was the first to have a pop-up selfie camera popping out of the house! We've tested it, you can read about it and we also showed it on YouTube. But Xiaomi hasn't dismissed this option, because it's the only way to get a truly full screen.

Xiaomi hasn't forgotten how to use it, but with today's technology. Back then, they used electric motors, spindles and springs:

However, the new patent will have almost no moving parts, but will use magnets to move the unit. The pop-up camera module comprises: a module housing, a camera housing, n coils, a first magnet and a second magnet, where n is an integer greater than 1.

The module housing is designed with a protruding hole for the camera housing, the inner part above the camera housing is equipped with a camera. N coils are arranged in parallel and axially surround the outer wall under the camera housing. The first magnet and the second magnet are located in the module housing, and coil n is located between the first magnet and the second magnet.

The wording of the patent may be a bit terse. But the main thing is that there is a permanent magnet at the bottom of the camera module and an electromagnet in the housing next to it. The electromagnet will move the camera module up and down. You have to imagine something like the shoulder button in the Redmi / Poco Gamer phone.

So what will pop-up cameras be able to do again? In Mix and Fold phones, or is Redmi coming up with this solution again? We'll find out.
