You can open the bootloader of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones at your own risk, with some complications. Sometimes you'll have to wait days or weeks for permission, but once you've opened it, you're free to put whatever you want on your phone. But one thing you shouldn't expect is a HyperOS update!

Opening the bootloader of Xiaomi and Redmi phones is heavily restricted in China, not only do you have to ask permission from Xiaomi, but you also have to be a "good guy" in the community. This means that you have to be active on the Xiaomi Community in China, post, like, report bugs etc. Here's what all Chinese fans need to do to open the bootloader of their phone:

  • You must be a Chinese citizen
  • You can only use the Chinese HyperOS and you have to report bugs daily
  • Make a monthly proposal to improve HyperOS
  • Every day you need to post and like on the Chinese Xiaomi Community
  • Your level goes up when you publish posts

If you've done everything right, you'll reach the level 5 developer account and you can request to open your bootloader. So it's as simple as that. But you've already cut the wood out from under you, because you won't get any more updates.

According to an official statement published recently in the Chinese community, if you open the bootloader of your phone under HyperOS, you will not get any more OTA updates. However, with the bootloader open, you can add as many updates as you want. I mean the right one. And of course any custom ROM like xiaomi.eu. Plus there are a few more conditions to unlock. You get the license 3 days after you submit the application. You can unlock up to 3 phone bootloaders per year with your account. Unlimited access to the same phone.

The move is motivated by the need to protect Chinese users and the Chinese government's interest in surveillance and security. It makes it less likely that tracking systems can be circumvented and any clandestine, illegal activity can take place. Well yes, in China the situation is a bit different.

This "restriction" has so far only been introduced in China, although it would not be possible to do so with European tax. For us and all global Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO phones, the usual bootloader opening procedure remains.
