Globally, manufacturers sold 340 million smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of 2021. This is an all-time high, an increase of 24% from the 2015 peak. Many are speculating as to why this huge increase, with many citing 5G.
In terms of manufacturers, Samsung came out on top with 77 million handsets, a market share of 23% and an annual growth of 32%. Apple came in second with 57 million units and 44% more than 39 million units in the same period last year, representing a market share of 17%. In the first quarter, Xiaomi sold 49 million smartphones, a 80% up on the same period last year, its market share was 15%, ranking it third. OPPO finished in fourth place with 38 million smartphones and a market share of 11%. In fifth place was VIVO with 37 million units.
Keep it up Xiaomi, go for the second place and then the first! Well, the company is still a long way off, but who knows? Anyway, Xiaomi is only 2% behind Apple in market share, so second place is a realistic future scenario.
