All Xiaomi fans are eagerly awaiting the launch of the Mi 10 range. It's no different in our editorial office, where we still have no official confirmation on the exact launch date. The following information was shared by Micron Technology on Weibo, revealing when the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro 5G will be unveiled.

Earlier rumours had suggested that the Mi 10 duo would be unveiled before the Samsung Galaxy S20, but this has been pushed back to 13 February, possibly due to the extended Lunar New Year holiday caused by the Crown Virus.

History

Micron Technology announced today (6 February morning) that it will begin mass production of the world's first low-power LPDDR5 DRAM chip designed for the high-end smartphone market. Micron has previously posted that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 series will be the first smartphone to ship the new memory chip. The Mi 10 is believed to be the first smartphone in the market to come with the latest LPDDR5 RAM technology. It is possible, however, that the Samsung Galaxy S20 series could be ahead of the game if they themselves are already producing the new RAM version.

After Micron confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi 10 will come with LPDDR5 RAM, it surprised 5 of its followers with a 100 yuan coupon (redeemable on JD.com) to use towards the purchase of the new Xiaomi flagship. Micron says it will issue the coupon to select users on February 13 to purchase the Mi 10. This date may indicate that the flagship can be ordered from then.

Wang Teng Thomas, Product Director at Xiaomi, has confirmed that all Mi 10 series variants will be equipped with the latest LPDDR5 RAM. It is therefore likely that both the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro will come with LPDDR5.

Bookings are expected to start three days before the official launch on 10 February. The Xiaomi Mi 10 will go on sale as early as February 14. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro will go on sale a few days later, on February 18.

LPDDR5

Micron's LDDR5 12GB RAM is manufactured using industry-leading manufacturing technology. The low-power DDR5 has transfer rates of up to 6.4 Gbps. In terms of speed, it is twice as fast as LPDDR4 and 20 percent faster than LPDDR4x RAM. Data access speeds have increased by 50% for LPDDR5.

It consumes 20 percent less energy than the previous generation. According to Micron Technology, just because LPDDR5 is faster, it also speeds up the processing and operational speed of applications. Therefore, devices equipped with LPDD5 can help extend battery life by 5-10 percent.

In terms of performance, Micron Technology said that the predecessor's LPDDR4 RAM can be used for 4K, 8K applications and image editing. However, it does not work well with AR games, 100 megapixel images (yes, we have experienced it on the Mi Note 10) and for high-performance video editing. These benefits are available with LPDDR5. Furthermore, when LPDDR4 is running 100 applications at the same time, bottlenecks can occur. LPDDR5 devices should not encounter such a problem, the company claims.

LPDDR5 can provide the necessary speed and capacity for the AI engine, which is built directly into the mobile device's processor. These CPUs are based on Micron's embedded LPDDR5 memory data transfer, supporting machine learning capabilities. Phones with 8 GB and 12 GB of RAM are expected to be released in the first half of the year. The 16 GB phones are expected to arrive in the second half of 2020.

Xiaomi Group President Chang Cheng said: "We appreciate Micron's long-term leadership and innovation in memory. Micron's LPDDR5 DRAM memory delivers market-leading performance and lower power consumption in Xiaomi Mi 10 smartphones. It also provides better performance and stability. We believe LPDDR5 will become standard in flagship smartphones in 2020."
Xiaomi should officially confirm the launch of the Mi 10 series.

65W fast charging and included charging head

After Lu Weibing indicated that the Xiaomi Mi 10 series will definitely be unveiled... (the picture below shows the board meeting)

"The crown virus should not prevent the launch of the Mi 10"

So the crown virus will not affect the show (no major postponement is expected), but the offline event remains in question.

...photos of the packaging have emerged, as well as photos of the phone itself. The pictures match the earlier leaks - the front and back use curved surfaces. According to the images that have surfaced on Weibo, the real photo of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro uses a curved design on four sides with a thin bottom coffee.

Although the picture is a bit (very) blurry, you can see that the "hole" camera is located in the top left corner of the phone. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. The smartphone's display can run at refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The frequency is adjustable and is expected to be 90Hz by default.

I don't understand how you can shoot such lousy pictures with a flagship, especially with the cool macro function.

Although image quality does not reflect the watermarks one of the 108MP, i.e. the quad camera unit will include a 108MP sensor. The Sony IMX686 is 64MP. According to information from 3C certification, the new Xiaomi 5G models, model numbers M2001J1E and M2001J1C, will support up to 66W fast charging. However, in the image above, we can see that this smartphone does indeed have a 65W charger.

In the other pictures you can see that there have been changes compared to the Mi 9:

  • the symmetrical double 5-hole grille at the bottom (one behind the mono speaker, the other behind the microphone) is not there, instead we get a single 6-hole grille. Next to it, you can see the microphone a little further away. Next to the USB-C port is the SIM tray.
  • Nothing new on the right, the volume button on top, the Power button below.
  • The left side is empty
  • Above is another interesting feature: Another 6-hole grid, this could be one half of the stereo speaker and the bottom half the other. Next to it is the infrared port and the noise cancelling microphone.

In summary So, the Mi 10 series could be an exciting phone, although there are no drastic changes in design this time. A top processor, with a sufficiently fast memory, a better and edge design OLED display, a quad camera with the latest sensors, and even faster charging. There is no reliable information about Qi (wireless) charging yet, but we hope it will not be left out of any Mi 10 model.
