The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A is here!

The internet has been abuzz for days about the new Redmi Note family member, but today the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A has finally been revealed!

What we knew in advance is that it comes in 3 colours, silver, pink and gold. The front is white, regardless of the colour of the back.

What's new from the base specification is the battery size, which is "only" 3080 mAh, but let's hope the Snapdragon 435 makes smart use of this small capacity, coupled with the significantly better battery life of MIUI9! I wonder what a 3080 mAh battery is enough for? Tests will come afterwards when the device is available for purchase, but the manufacturer claims 32 hours of talk time, 12 hours of gaming, 15 hours of navigation, 75 hours of music playback and 10 days of standby. Don't let the standby time fool you, that's how long the phone will last if you don't touch it!

You can't complain about its size, it's slimmer than its predecessors. At 7.7mm thick, it's thinner than the Redmi Note 4X (8.5mm), thanks to the smaller battery capacity, but it's slightly longer and wider, but we're only talking millimetres.

Here's the twist, the Redmi Note 5A's camera is the exact opposite of what you're used to, with the front 'selfie' camera having a higher resolution than the rear. Interesting... We already know the front one:

  • 16 MP resolution
  • f/2.0 aperture
  • Wide angle of view, 76.4º
  • 1080p/720p, 30fps
  • Face recognition
  • Second generation, 36 smart beauty features
  • Beauty feature also for real-time video calls
  • Self-timer
  • LED auxiliary light

Specification of the rear camera:

  • 13 MP resolution
  • f/2.2 aperture
  • PDAF phase focus
  • Dark Light Quality Improvement Technology
  • HDR - high dynamic range adjustment technology
  • Panorama mode
  • Burst mode
  • Face recognition function
  • Real-time filter for taking pictures

It has a 5.5″ screen with 2.5D glass. It has a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, 450nit high brightness and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. It supports a sunlight display, boosting contrast and brightness in sunny conditions to see everything perfectly, and also protects your eyes by automatically adjusting brightness in the dark.

The other great idea is the triple SIM tray, which not only holds your two SIM cards, but also your expandable MicroSD card. The two SIM slots are NANO sized and both cards support 4G networking as follows:

GSM B2 / B3 / B5 / B8
WCDMA B1 / B2 / B5 / B8
TD-SCDMA B34 / B39
CDMA2000 / 1X BC0
Fdiv-LTE B1 / B3 / B5 / B7 / B8
TD-LTE B34 / B38 / B39 / B40 / B41 (2555-2655 MHz)

Yes, you read that right, no B20! For now...

The wireless networks have the familiar specification, WiFi 802.11 b / g / n, with WiFi Direct and WiFi Display, and Bluetooth 4.2 with Bluetooth HID.

Additional equipment:

  • GPS
  • AGPS
  • Beidou positioning
  • Infrared remote control
  • Giroscope
  • Acceleration sensor
  • Distance sensor
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Electronic compass
  • Fingerprint recognition
  • Vibration motor

The price is also a great match for its capabilities, in China you only have to shell out 699 Yuan for the 2/16 version (105$), 899 Yuan for the one larger 3/32 (135$) and the price of the largest 4/64 is unknown at the moment.
