It was 2011, when Android 3.0 was released. At that time, Android for phones and tablets was running under a separate major version, and 3.0 was just for tablets. The two versions were merged with 4.0, but the fundamental differences remained - you can't have the same user interface on a 6-inch phone as on a 10-inch tablet.

Android 12 was released in October this year, but there will also be a 12L version. The 'L' stands for large, which means optimised for large displays. The main differences are explained on Google's developer page presents, but I'll briefly summarise the main points.

Android 12L for tablets is a response to the iPad OS, which will be released in 2019. The iPad OS is also an iOS, but a little different, a little more optimised for tablets. Now, back to Android 12L.

As you can see in the GIF, there is a greater emphasis on multitasking.

The compatibility mode appears, the idea is that the applications that don't run normally under a tablet, they shouldn't be stretched out like a pastry, they should look normal.

Most of the features are about making use of the width of the device. Don't have so much empty space, look better, work more efficiently.

Yesterday, Google officially released the first beta version of Android 12L for testing. An average mortal can try out the new system, as it can be tested with the emulator inside Android Studio.

Android 12L Beta 1 is available on supported Pixel devices (Pixel 3 XL and above). If you participated in the Android 12 beta testing, you will automatically receive the 12L update. If not, you can register for testing. That's kind of weird, because these are phones. But Google doesn't make tablets, the last one was the Pixel Slate 3 years ago, but it doesn't run Android, it runs Chrome OS.

Besides these, the main thing is that Google has also released the GSI for Android 12L, which is the generic system image. This is the pure system itself, which can be applied to any device after appropriate modification.

And a Chinese Weibo user uploaded a Xiaomi Pad 5-@铺路菜鸟 photos show several interfaces, including the home screen, notification bar and settings. Here is the gallery:

It is questionable how MIUI developers will take advantage of Android 12L, but that remains to be seen. The new system will definitely not be released this year.
