The most important trend in 2017 was clearly smartphones with 18:9 displays. The LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 (18.5×9) were the first to debut with such (stretched) aspect ratios, and quickly became popular. After that, in the last few months, a number of entry-level and mid-range smartphones with such displays have arrived from China (e.g. LG Q6).

Mid-range smartphones with a full-screen display, such as the Vivo X20 and X20 Plus, are available at a very high price. However, there are many entry-level clones available on the Chinese market for cheaper. As no major brand has released an affordable phone with a full-screen display, those who can't afford it will have to wait to buy. But you may not have to wait much longer, because rumour has it that the future Redmi phones will have an 18:9 screen. Before we get into that, let's see what led us to this conclusion.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is the second Xiaomi phone to feature a bezel-less design. Initially it was claimed that the display was supplied by LG, but it was discovered that some panels were sourced from JDI. A Weibo user indicated that some of the displays were from Tianma, a Chinese manufacturer. However, the popular analyst, Pan Jiutang the Mi MIX 2 is not being manufactured and will not use Tianma's display.

However, a representative from a domestic display manufacturer revealed that Xiaomi has scheduled an 18:9 display purchase, which is expected to be fitted to the new generation of Redmi phones. The exact type has not been specified yet, but it will probably be used on the Redmi Note 5, or at the latest on the Redmi Note 6.
